Herbert "Herb" Nichols' Obituary
Herbert “Herb” Nichols, age 83, of St. Clair, went to be with the Lord on Sunday August 28th, 2022. He was born in Martinsburg, West Virginia on February 16, 1939. From 4-11 years old he lived in the Children’s Have orphanage with Mom and Pop Wheeler in Charleston, WV. This is where he was loved, learned responsibility, and learned how to take care of himself. These values are how he became the man that he was. His nickname was “Mugsy”. Pop always told him “Mugsy, you are the only one that could make a preacher cuss.” We guess that he was no angel.
At age 11 he moved to Michigan with his mother. At 15, he got a job as a pinsetter in the bowling alley while also attending school in Detroit. After school, he worked for D & E sign company, got married and had 3 children.
After D & E, he became a carpenter and was a member of the Carpenters Union for 60 years. He also worked for years for Convention Show and Services at Cobo Hall as the general foreman for setting up all the shows, Auto, Boat, Auto Rama, Home builders, and several others.
He was an active member at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, serving as an usher for several years. He was a 3rd degree member of the Marysville Knights of Columbus council 9526. In his spare time Herb loved to bowl, golf, fishing on the Michigan Lakes, playing the lottery, working on projects, and helping others with their home projects. He also enjoyed up north, especially the Oscoda area. He loved sitting around the campfire, smoking cigarettes as well las sitting by the lake with his beloved dog, and best friend, Sofia. They never left each other’s side. But most of all, he loved family first.
He is survived by his children, Paul (Hala) Nichols, Herbert “Tony” Nichols, Timothy Nichols; step children, Christine (Randy) Williams, Susan Szachta, Cheryl (Steve) Salgot, Michael (Diane) Letourneau; sisters, Ruth Jenkins, Darlene Nichols; grandchildren, Amber, Crystal (Jake), Katie (Chris), Dyana, Peter, Kari, Amanda, Kelly, David (Melissa), Theresa (Kenny), Tom, Lindsey (Daniel), Mark (Karen), Nikki, Matt, Amber (Justin), Joe (Sara), Louie (Clare), Lisa (Eric); great grandchildren, Mackenzie, Ben, Tristen, Luna Bella, Quinn, Nova, Aubrey, Brooke, Payton, Isabella, Alexis, Sidney, Cassey, Jackson, Noah, Elliott; and ex-wife, Bobbie Quinn.
