Mr. Schnaubelt was one of the best men I’ve ever known. He was a true and caring teacher. Like many that he taught, I carried my calligraphy skills — and pens — for many, many years. The foundations of German that he taught us helped me mumble my way through my visit to Germany. I thought about him many times while I was there.
I will never forget how he used to allow us to bring Transformers toys into class with us. He used those as teaching aids to help us understand the ingenuity and mechanics that went into such toys. He would tell us to imagine how intelligent the toy designers must be to come up with vehicles that successfully turned into robots. Turns out, they were more than meets the eye.
During the summer, my friend and I used to visit Mr. Schnaubelt when we were riding our three wheelers waaaay out in the country. If we spotted him outside doing yardwork, we would stop in for a chat and play with his dogs. As a man of God, he had the The Lord’s Prayer hand lettered in German Gothic calligraphy around the upper part of his garage (if my memory serves me correctly).
Most people have that one person who helped to influence their lives from an early age. Despite the short amount of time that I knew him, I’m proud to say that Mr. Schnaubelt was mine. I’m quite certain that he will get a Fast Pass into Heaven.
