Robert Wilson Gunn's Obituary
Robert Wilson Gunn, 80, died Monday, June 26, 2006, surrounded by his loving family at home, after a long illness.
Bob was born on August 29, 1925 in Kentucky to Richard and Mabel Gunn. He married Rita F. Ahles on April 8, 1947 in Napoleon, Ohio. Bob moved to Detroit from Kentucky when he was five years old. He served in the Marines from 1943 to 1946, attending boot camp in San Diego and training at Camp Pendleton. Staff Sergeant Gunn served 18 months in the Pacific Theatre, with 48 days in Iwo Jima and 6 months in Japan during the occupation. He met his wife of 59 years through fellow serviceman, Don Shagena. Bob worked at the Diamond Crystal for 18 years as a carpenter. He started working for the Detroit Carpenter’s Union in 1965 and retired in 1987. Bob has been a member of St. Peter’s Lutheran Church since 1947. He also belonged to the American Legion. He enjoyed bowling, fishing, and watching the Red Wings, Tigers and Pistons with his family. He is survived by his wife, Rita; son Robert (Carol) Gunn, Jr.; daughters Susan M. Kasemeyer, Rebecca (Doug) DeVary, and Nancy Kammer; grandchildren Jeremy (Billie) and Andrew (Melissa) Gunn; Buddy and Rob Bernardo; Timothy (Sonya), Anthony, and Tamara DeVary; Kelly, Rachel, and Jennifer Kammer; great grandchildren Jacob, Christian, Aubrie, Amberly, Colin, Noe, Anthony, and Raya; two aunts, Maude and Lucille; sisters-in-law Betty Richter and Marilyn Pegg; several nieces and nephews; and dear friends, Dick and Janice Golder. He was preceded in death by his parents, Richard and Mabel; brother John (Lois) Wood, and sister Marie (Charles) Willett, and an infant brother. Visitation will be from 2 to 8 p.m. on Wednesday, June 28 in L.C. Friederichs and Son Funeral Home, St. Clair. The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Thursday in St. Peter’s Lutheran Church. The Rev. Roland Troike will officiate. Burial will be in Hillside Cemetery in St. Clair. Memorials may be made to St. Peter’s Lutheran Church.
