Elmon L. Hassell's Obituary
Elmon L. “Al” Hassell age 91 of St. Clair died Wednesday August 20,2003. Al was born July 4, 1912 in Detroit. He was a loving husband, devoted Father, astute businessman and a true friend to all who knew him. Al was born, grew up and lived in the Detroit area.
He graduated from Cass Technical High School in 1930. He worked for Hudson Motor Car Company, a brokerage firm and in 1937 joined Gibraltar Cement Products where he worked for over 60 years. He was a lifelong member of the Lutheran Faith, having been a member of Salem Lutheran Church and Salem Memorial Lutheran Church in Detroit and St. Peters Lutheran Church in St. Clair.
Al married Dorothy Trombley in 1934 and they lived in Detroit until her death in 1950.
He married Barbara Arends in 1951 and lived in Detroit and later St. Clair until her death in 1985. Al married Sally Flynn in 1989. They had a special loving marriage, which Al treasured. Their life was surrounded by six busy and boisterous stepchildren and their families.
Al enjoyed a special 77-year relationship with Fred Oderfer. They maintained a strong friendship from their days at Cass Tech until the day Al passed away. He also enjoyed a special business relationship with the Klochko Family of Grosse Isle, who bought Gibraltar Cement Products in 1979- later changing the name of the company to Gibraltar National Corporation. Al celebrated 60 years working with Gibraltar. Steve Klochko,
President of Gibraltar, and Al developed a very special working relationship. Al treasured each day at Gibraltar and the opportunity to work with his many friends and business acquaintances in the construction, flooring and packaged cement industry.
Al and Dorothy had two children, Bonnie Hassell Stewart of Naples Florida and Lee
Hassell of Plano Texas. Four grandchildren Kathy Hassell Sorensen, Jon Tillery, Christine Hassel and Jason Tillery, two great grand children Kia Jacob Sorensen and
Izabela Stewart. Step children James, Kevin, Coreen, Darcy and Shawn Flynn, Katherine Haemelinck. Step grandchildren Jamie Lee, Rory, Courtney, Kiley Flynn, James and Stephen Sonner, Phillip and Kendall Westrick.
Al was a very special person to all who knew him. He enjoyed life to the fullest and was a joy to be with. He gave of himself to those he loved and knew. His family and loved ones are so very thankful that he is now at peace and living with his Lord and Savior.
Visitation Friday 1-5 and 7-9 at the L.C. Friederichs & Son Funeral Home, St. Clair.
Saturday at St. Peter’s Lutheran Church, St. Clair from 10 AM till service at 11 AM.
Burial Hillside Cemetery. Memorials to the Red Cross or Salvation Army.
