What is a Grandma?
She is a woman you meet when you are little
She may have read to you the book Hey Diddle Diddle.
Time goes so fast and things get hard to remember
So I will tell you a little about my Grandma, who was born on the 23rd of December.
She was a wonderful lady, very unique in her own way
She was “Catherine”… what else is there to say!
Yankee Road is where the memories began
Lots of games with cousins like tag & kick the can.
We picked and pitted cherries you all know what I mean
Seemed like all day, until our fingers turned green.
Weed pulling, raking and watering the tomatoes
We would all laugh at the way Grandpa would say “get eatin your botatas”.
My favorite time was when I would get to stay the night
I would bring my babies and it was such a delight.
We would crochet and knit (the same thing every time)
Grandma would just smile & laugh, she didn’t mind.
Then time would pass and things got blurry
Seems like we all grew up in a hurry.
The next memory I had is when I was eleven
That is when my Grandpa went to heaven.
I knew that Grandma missed him so much
No longer there to make her smile or feel her touch.
After that time it was very sad
A lot of Grandmas day’s felt really bad.
We all knew it would take time to heal
We didn’t know just how she would feel.
Thank goodness for her neighbor, Helen Scrout
She would cheer Catherine up there would be no doubt.
They would play cards and scrabble and stay up late
And when they ate their dinner they would “clean up their plate”!
All the Good times with Helen would make a long list
I would name them all but I’m sure you get the gist.
Time then passed and Helen passed away
Catherine would have another bad day.
We all missed her, she was so much fun
It seems like the good times had just begun.
We all had our memories and our favorite days
Unfortunately God works in mysterious ways.
Many years passed and I don’t remember so well
So I will move on to the stories I can tell!
After I got married, I moved away
I didn’t see Grandma much but I missed her each day.
When I moved back, closer to home
To see Grandma now, I wouldn’t have to roam.
Closer, but not next door, I didn’t see her frequently
I was busy with two little boys you see!
A few more years passed, and we moved to Marysville
We will see each other more, I know we will.
We took many pictures of Grandma to share
All the photo’s proved, she had great hair!
I have many photos with her and my kids
She may have kept some of them in boxes with lids.
With the kids now in school, I could make more time
I would visit Grandma frequently, I didn’t mind.
We would drink coffee and chat, maybe only for an hour
When it was time to say goodbye, her face would sour.
So the years went on and we made Tuesday, our day
Scrabble is the game we used to play!
Now Catherine would never cut you any slack,
If you played in her spot, she would be on the attack!
Most of you know, so I will make it brief,
Never a game was played that she didn’t give you grief!
We hoped that she would always get a smash
Otherwise she may start talking trash!
Now Scrabble is not the only thing we would do
Oh no, there was much more, but I’ll just name a few.
I never knew a woman, who used so much honey!
And the funny thing is, it costs so much money!
Catherine was frugal, and never liked to waste
Wheat germ on oatmeal? “Just to give it some taste”!
A shopping list is what every visitor got
Not too many items, but we got the lists a lot!
Honey, raisin bread, oatmeal were always on the list
I would politely take it, and try not to make a fist!
Even though she had you racing, up and down the aisle
You knew this grocery trip was going to take a while.
Lots of grocery memories, for the good and for the bad
Every time we got that list, we would always act glad.
After several years, it was time for Grandma to move
She needed more help, she had nothing to prove.
