Betty June Winslow's Obituary
Betty June Winslow age 89 of St. Clair died, Sunday, January 9, 2011. Betty was born Febraury 6,1921 in Kansas City, Kansas to the late William and Mary Ellen Lobb. She received her Bachelors of Science in Education from Kansas State Teachers College, and began teaching in Pleasant Kansas High School in 1943 where she met her husband the late J. T. Winslow. They were married on June 1, 1947 in Kansas City, Kansas. They moved to Missouri for several years, and Betty earned her masters while teaching in public schools. In 1955 they moved to St. Clair
and Betty began teaching at Marine City High School. They moved to Ohio in 1960 and returning to St. Clair in 1962. Betty became involved in the Title One Reading program with East China Schools, eventually retiring from that position in 1979.
Betty was active in her community, serving as the President of the Blue Water Reading Council,
a member of the St. Clair Recreation and Beautification commissions and on the Impossible Dream Committee.
As a member, and eight term President of the St. Clair Music Study Club, she initiated Patron Membership , “Music At The Gazebo” , created a piano scholarship and enjoyed the members. In 1994 she was named “Citizen of the Year” by the St. Clair Rotary and made a Paul Harris Fellow by the club.
She was an active member of the First Congregational U.C. of C. in St. Clair, serving as Deacon, Elder, Trustee, Moderator and Editor of The Channel for 15 years. At church she was a member of the Winthrop Circle, played for the choir and served on the Mission and Outreach Committee, she was President of the Women's’ Fellowship at the .state level. Betty enjoyed playing the piano, playing bridge, especially with the dinner bridge twelve, and reading. She was active with the River District Hospital Auxiliary, serving two years as President, and began the Lifeline program and served as the coordinator for eight years. She was a member Cornell-Marysville #93, OES.
Betty is survived by several cousins and many dear friends, and her dear cats.
Cremation has taken place with a memorial service to be held, Saturday, January 15 at 11 AM
in the First Congregational U.C. of C. St. Clair, Pastor Rob Hunter officiating. Memorials may be made in Betty’s name to the Church, St.Clair Music Club Scholarship C/O the St.Clair County Foundation, 516 McMorran, Port Huron, MI., or the River District Hospital Auxiliary Scholarship fund or Donors Choice
