Mr Bernie H. Waelens' Obituary
Bernie H Waelens, age 85, of St.Clair died, Wednesday, April 9, 2014. Bernie was
born March 15, 1929 in Marine City to the late Charles and Banie Waelens.
He graduated from Marine City High School and served in the Marines during the Korean War. Bernie married Suzanne Joachim on April 10, 1951. He owned and operated Waelens Building Supply in Marine City until 2001. Waelens Building Supply was started by Charles Waelens who emigrated from Belgium in the early 1900’s. Bernie was thankful for the donations he was able to make through his business to the communities of St. Clair and Marine City-concrete for parks, churches and ball parks. Bernie was a member of the First Congregational UC of C, St. Clair, the Shriner Blue Water Lodge and the Masons.
He is survived by his wife Suzanne, son David of St. Clair, daughter Dawn
(Darrell) Rogers of Traverse City, grand daughters Emily (Mike) Haligowski
of Grand Rapids and Maggie Rogers and great grand daughter Zoe. The family is welcoming a new great grandchild at this time.
He was preceded in death by his brother Dociel Waelens, sisters Wilda Kogelschatz, Anna Warkentien and Virginia Waelens.
Cremation has taken place and the family will receive friends Saturday at the First Congregational Church, St. Clair from 10 AM till 11 AM when a memorial service will be held. In lieu of flowers, memorials in Bernies name may be made to the church .
